Clothing

My attention was called to a couple of videos going around where preachers were preaching about
women wearing pants. Both preachers were very serious about the sinfulness of a woman daring to be
so brazen and disobedient. Some may be shocked to learn that this is being talked about from the pulpit
but I can recall the time it was preached from many Southern Baptist pulpits!
I well remember an occasion when my daddy was pastor of a church in the mid-1970’s and my mother,
because she was keeping the nursery that night and wasn’t going to be in the sanctuary, wore slacks (as
was her habit at home during the week). There was much discussion and hand-wringing and a deacon’s
meeting was hurriedly called. The end result was that scripture was vigorously studied and ladies were
allowed to wear slacks at church…if they so desired.
The main scripture dissected was Deuteronomy 22:5: “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a
man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” With all the
transgender nonsense being promoted as normal, and even desired, (even within some misguided
Christian churches) we can better see what God was talking about. In fact, if you look at depictions of
fashion in the Old Testament times, there wasn’t a huge difference in the way the sexes dressed. There
were certainly no slacks involved.
This is one example of reading the Bible and not studying the Bible. Or, perhaps, taking someone’s word
without investigating to see if what they say is right. We can, and have, taken a verse or two and
applied the current line of thought to a historical standard. That can cause a lot of misunderstanding.
I saw a man on a music awards show dressed in a red dress and heels, referring to himself as “they”. I
also saw a few ladies at church dressed nicely in slacks and jeans. It doesn’t take a Biblical scholar to
decide which violates the command of God.
Say good things about your Savior and about His church here in Bluff Park.
