Human Nature

About 2,800 years ago the writer of Ecclesiastes stated why the Bible doesn’t need to be understood in
light of the modern times or interpreted according to what we know today. He wrote: “What has been
will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes
1:9 NIV). Nothing new under the sun? Really?
We have so many medical breakthroughs, our technology has exploded, and science is uncovering things
we never dreamed of even a hundred years ago. So not only a little, but an enormous amount of
change has taken place. Surely we need to bring the Bible up to date. Don’t we?
The Bible wasn’t written to help us handle medicine, science, or technology. Of course our knowledge
of those things has increased exponentially. The Bible speaks to human nature and our relationship to
God. And…this is a great truth that we must understand…human nature has not changed. Not in the
least. All aspects of human nature remain the same: Selfishness, anger, lust, love, hate,
compassion…every aspect.
Think about it: There is not one single, solitary scientific reason for selfishness or lust or love or even
any of the sexual perversions the world celebrates today. There is no “gay gene”, no transgender
anomaly of the brain, nor medical explanation for any of the LGBTQ+ desires the world is pushing.
None. Nada. Not one. It has all been tried before, it’s nothing new. Those calling such things
“progressive” are sadly mistaken. They have been tried by countless generations over the many years;
there is nothing new under the sun.
Therefore, the Bible is just as important and every bit as relevant today as the day it was breathed into
life. The Bible shows us good versus evil, light against darkness, and truth over lies. Evil, darkness, and
lies are the same now as then. As long as human nature remains the same, the Bible is to be read,
desires, and followed.
Say good things about your Savior and about His church here in Bluff Park.
