The Truth

A few years ago a neighbor asked me to testify to what I had seen them doing on property adjoining mine.  I agreed and went to the courthouse in Bessemer.  While waiting outside in the hallway a young lady asked me whose side I was on.  I told her that I wasn’t on anybody’s side.  I was just going to tell the truth and that truth doesn’t take sides.  Truth doesn’t take sides, does it?  Truth is what it is. Truth doesn’t change.  A dictionary defines truth as “the reality of a situation”.

I read a statement someone made regarding a disagreement two people were having and one said to the other, “That’s your truth and I have my truth”.  That is wrong.  Truth remains the same.  Now, their opinion of the facts may vary, but truth remains unchangeable.  When you dig down to the truth, you’ve hit the foundation; you can’t go any further.  I tell people that truth is absolute no matter what you think of it:  truth should change your opinion, but your opinion will never change the truth.

That is absolutely important when we understand that the Word of God is truth.  It is not an opinion nor is it just one way of thinking.  We are to measure anything and everything that goes on in this world by the Word of God.  It, and it alone, is truth.  John 14:6 tells us that Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life…”.  In John 17:17 Jesus, praying in the garden, says “Sanctity them by the truth; your word is truth.” And in Psalms 119:160 we are told: “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.”  See? Truth is absolute and never changing.

When you read or hear anything that contradicts the Bible, the Word of God, it is absolutely wrong.  In fact, Jesus went so far as to call anything that opposes Him as coming from Satan and therefore a lie. “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44

So there is our choice:  Believe the truth from God or the lies from Satan.  There is no in between.
